Jamestown colonists made wine in Virginia from native grapes in 1607. Although unsuccessful, Thomas Jefferson's efforts to grow European varietals at his home, Monticello, were the roots of a noble wine-making heritage that today has reached full flower. More than 60 wineries state-wide are producing wines that have been recognized in international competitions.
