 Virginia Wines & Wineries by Felicia Warburg Rogan, Jamestown colonists made wine in Virginia from native grapes in 1607. Although unsuccessful, Thomas Jefferson's efforts to grow European varietals at his home, Monticello, were the roots of a noble wine-making heritage that today has reached full flower. More than 60 wineries state-wide are producing wines that have been recognized in international competitions.
