Nctm Principle and Standard
Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally by John A. Van de Walle, X Praise for "Elementary and Middle School Mathematics." Overall, this book is an excellent resource for those who are investigating the teaching of mathematics at the elementary and middle school levels
Above all, the emphasis on student-centered problem solving is consistent with current trends and practices. This book is unique in that it challenges assumptions and traditional practices. Katherine Chamberlain, Lycoming College I have used Van de Walle since it came on the market and still feel it is, by far, the best available! The layout is excellent. The philosophical basis of the text is superb-It's easy to read by both undergraduates and graduate students in that it makes connections between their experiences and the philosophical foundations. Three major strengths include the references to the NCTM "Standards," inclusion of algebraic thought at all grade levels, and the continued development of the same themes and philosophical foundations. Tim Whiteford, Trinity College of Vermont [One] of the major reasons why Van de Walle's text is so useful
is the text's involvement of the reader in the development of mathematical reasoning. It creates a "thinker." Timothy Touzel, Coastal Carolina University New to the Fifth Edition Inspired by one of the five process standards in the NCTM "Principles and Standards', Content Connections" is a new feature that highlights the connections between content areas in mathematics in various chapters. NCTM icons appear in nearly every chapter and point explicitly to the alignment of this book with the NCTM "Principles and Standards" through excerpts andcommentary. Investigations in Number, Data, and Space and Connected Mathematics features spotlight examples of these two popular reform curricula for the K-5 and 6-8 grade levels, respectively.
Learning Mathematics in Elementary and Middle Schools How can you create a learning environment that supports and encourages children to build understandings, make connections, reason, and solve problems? This textbook helps prospective teachers learn how to teach mathematics in a way that is child-centered and focused on developing mathematics concepts aligned with the NCTM "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics." Videos that highlight exemplary math teaching, selected from the Annenberg/CPB Teaching Math Series, are free to adopting professors. Key text features identify how the math teachers captured on video weave the teaching of the math process standards--problem solving, representation, communication, reasoning and proof, and connections--into their math lessons. Features of the third edition include: Principles and Standards Links help readers connect the NCTM "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics" with chapter topics. NEW! Additions to chapters 14 and 17 more meaningfully address middle school mathematics concepts. Classroom Clips, full-color features integrating the video package, highlight outstanding teachers engaged with children in math classrooms. A NEW video chosen especially for preservice middle school teachers presents an exemplary model for teaching math to adolescents. NEW! Technology Links in each chapter look at meaningful website activities for use in the college classroom as well as in elementary and middle school classrooms. Links to each highlighted site can be made directly from our Companion Website at www.prenhall.com/cathcart Literature Links throughout chapters connect topics presented in the text to children's books. The Literature Links also include ideas for extensionactivities readers can use with children to enhance children's understanding of the topic.
Transfer principle - In mathematics particularly in non-standard analysis, the transfer principle is a rule which transforms assertions about standard sets, mappings etc., into one about internal sets, mappings etc. Gold standard - The gold standard is a monetary system in which the standard economic unit of account is a fixed weight of gold and currency issuers guarantee, under specified rules, to redeem notes in that amount of gold. Nations that employ such a fixed unit of account, and which will redeem their notes to other nations in gold, in principle, share a fixed currency relationship. Hume's principle - Hume's principle is a standard for comparing any two sets of objects as to size. According to the principle, the number of F's is equal to the number of G's if there is a one-to-one correspondence (a bijection) between the F's and the G's. Uncertainty principle - In quantum physics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that one cannot assign with full precision values for certain pairs of observable variables, including the position and momentum, of a single particle at the same time even in theory. It furthermore precisely quantifies the imprecision by providing a lower bound (greater than zero) for the product of the standard deviations of the measurements.
